CHINA:  China Pledges to Redouble Anti-AIDS Fight

China will make HIV prevention a key priority, Vice President Xi Jinping told UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe on Thursday. The government "will combine the prevention and containment of HIV/AIDS with reform of the medical and health care systems to improve the people's health by strengthening the public health care service," Xi said. Sidibe urged more than 100 health care leaders and providers meeting in Shanghai to follow the example of Bangkok, where condom use has helped slash HIV among sex workers in brothels. He also said the world's largest cities should unite and mobilize toward the goal of being free of HIV by 2015. A large-scale HIV/AIDS outbreak in China would do serious damage to the economies of the nation and the whole world, officials fear.
