The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to immediately discontinue use of a supplement claiming to treat a range of diseases from HIV to hepatitis following reports it is making people sick. When used as directed, Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), also marketed under the name Miracle Mineral Supplement, produces chlorine dioxide, an industrial-strength bleach used in stripping textiles and treating water, FDA said. The agency noted it is "not aware of any research that MMS is effective in treating" any of the conditions MMS claims to treat.
FDA said it has received numerous reports of serious side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and life-threatening low blood pressure resulting from dehydration. Anyone possessing MMS should throw it away immediately, said agency spokesperson Elaine Gansz Bobo.
How many people have used MMS is not clear at this point, said FDA. "At this point, we are just trying to get the word out and warn consumers," said Bobo.
MMS is distributed online by a variety of companies. Although all the products share the MMS name, they have different labels.
FDA is urging patients who have been made sick by MMS to see a doctor as soon as possible and to report their adverse events by visiting the website www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/ or calling 800-332-1088.
