At the completion of this educational session, learners will:
  1. Know the options for non-occupational HIV post-exposure prophylaxis including new recommendations from New York State.
  2. Understand concurrent baselines and STD screening and prevention (including hepatitis vaccination) for PEP recipients.
  3. Appreciate the opportunity for PrEP counseling and future consideration during PEP follow-up.
  4. Be familiar with the populations in whom PrEP has been effective and the guidelines for use as part of a prevention strategy.

Joe McGowan is a Professor of Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and credentialed as an HIV Specialist by the AAHIVM. He received a BA degree from Columbia University (summa cum laude), MD from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and has completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and an NIH Fellowship in Immunology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. McGowan has published over 60 original articles and abstracts dealing with HIV and AIDS.
