About the Presenter: Top of page

Dr. Hope received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed his postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco. At Northwestern University, Dr. Hope’s laboratory has been a pioneer the use of cell biology approaches to study HIV providing images and movies of HIV interacting with cells and tissues. For the past 25 years, his research has focused on HIV Cellular Virology. More recently, this focus has expanded to HIV related mucosal immunology, HIV transmission, and HIV prevention science. Dr. Hope is also the Editor-in-Chief of AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses and a Section Editor for PLoS Pathogens.

Learning Objectives: Top of page

At the completion of this educational session, learners will:
  • Be aware the mucosal immune cell types initially infected by HIV after sexual exposure, the highly dynamic nature of the early host-virus interactions at the portal of transmission, and how the virus is distributed after sexual exposure and infection.
  • Understand the detailed mechanisms of how pre exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prevents HIV acquisition and why systemic PrEP (oral pill) works better than topical PrEP (Microbicides) to prevent transmission.
  • Appreciate the weaknesses associated with using blood sampling to evaluate the outcome of antiviral treatment and monitor HIV reservoirs relating to HIV Cure Research.
  • Appreciate how utilizing state-of-the-art Multi-scale imaging approaches are providing new insights into the natural history of HIV transmission, dissemination, reservoir formation, and mechanisms of prevention.
